Info zu Live At Birdland (Remaster)

Absolutely definitive Coltrane release ushering in the new sound of radical deepness at the start of the 1960s. „Alabama“ was written and performed shortly after the death of four children in a racist bombing of a church in Alabama. Coltrane wrote the song using the intonation and flow of the preacher at the funeral. It is a very, very profound piece of music.

This album is ESSENTIAL to an understanding of John Coltrane.

Coltrane Live at Birdland is a 1964 album by jazz musician John Coltrane. Despite its title, only the first three tracks were recorded live at the Birdland club; the rest are studio tracks. Among them is 'Alabama', a tribute to four children killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, an attack at a Birmingham, Alabama church by white supremacists. The album also features a live recording of 'I Want to Talk About You', a song Coltrane had recorded on his 1958 album Soultrane, this time with an extended cadenza.

„Arguably John Coltrane's finest all-around album, this recording has brilliant versions of 'Afro Blue' and 'I Want to Talk About You'; the second half of the latter features Coltrane on unaccompanied tenor tearing into the piece but never losing sight of the fact that it is a beautiful ballad. The remainder of this album ('Alabama,' 'The Promise,' and 'Your Lady') is almost at the same high level.“ (Scott Yanow, AMG)
