Composer Erik Lotichius is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. Inspired by minimalism, jazz and romanticism, his synthesis of styles and periods seems more timely than ever. This new collection includes the epic flute sonata and saxophone quartet as well as various pieces for adventurous instrumentations.
To Erik, inspiration came spontaneously. Sometimes we would sit in a café and, in the middle of our conversation, he'd ask me for a napkin. He'd quickly scribble down a tune and then resume talking. Later, those scribbles turned into full-fledged compositions – only this time, they were meticulously honed and crafted.
Clearly, there was no 'master plan' to his composing. He just followed his interests and wrote for a wide variety of ensemble constellations. But when I went through his scores after his passing, I did notice one thing : Throughout the years, he never stopped writing for woodwinds. Somehow, they always played a role in his life and his oeuvre. The pieces collected on this disc span a period from 1956, when he finished his quintet, up until the clarinet quartet, written sometime in the 2000s. They are testimony to a half-century of breathing and celebrating music. ...
