Gavin Sutherland
was Music Director of English National Ballet (ENB). Born in County Durham, he graduated from the University of Huddersfield in 1993, winning the Krucynski Prize for Piano and the Davidson Prize for Distinction brought to the Institution.
He began his career as staff conductor and pianist at Northern Ballet, and over the last 25 years, he has collaborated with many nationally- and internationally-acclaimed dance companies and orchestras. He has recorded over 100 CDs, principally of British music and including many world premiere performances. This strand of his career has led to a fruitful collaboration with the BBC, most notably with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia and City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
As ENB’s Music Director he collaborates artistically on all company repertoire, including orchestrating Vincenzo Lamagna’s score for the Olivier Award-winning Akram Khan’sGiselle and arranging, orchestrating and reconstructing much of the company’s production of Le Corsaire.
Besides his prolific ballet work, Sutherland regularly arranges for leading international orchestras, with performances of both these and reconstructions of notable lost scores. He has performed at venues as diverse as the Sydney Opera House and Buckingham Palace, and he frequently talks about music on TV and radio. In 2019 he was granted an Honorary Doctor of the University of Huddersfield, and in 2020 won the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Outstanding Creative Contribution.
At the Bavarian State Ballet he directed the world premiere of the ballet The Blizzard (Der Schneesturm) in 2021, choreographed by Andrey Kaydanovskiy on a new score by composer Lorenz Dangel.
