Roberto Alagna
was born in Clichy-sous-Bois, France. Shortly after winning first prize at the international ‘Luciano Pavarotti’ competition in Philadelphia in 1988, he was invited by Glyndebourne to sing Alfredo / LA TRAVIATA.

This was quickly followed by an invitation from the Teatro alla Scala, where he thrilled audiences in this very role under the direction of Riccardo Muti. He was also convincing there as the Duke / RIGOLETTO and Rodolfo / LA BOHEME. His sphere of activity soon extended to the major theatres in New York, Vienna and London. Alagna opened up a new range of roles in 1994 with his interpretation of Roméo in Gounod's ROMEO ET JULIETTE - from then on he also devoted himself to the French repertoire, succeeding as Werther, Faust and Don José. He also established himself as an outstanding interpreter of the Italian and French repertoire as Don Carlo in Paris and London, Des Grieux and Edgardo / LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR.

In 1995, he received the Laurence Olivier Prize, the highest award in British theatre. Since 2000, Alagna has expanded his repertoire to include roles such as Manrico, Canio and Radamès. He also devotes himself to works such as LE JONGLEUR DE NOTRE DAME (Massenet) and CYRANO DE BERGERAC (Alfano).

His discography on EMI includes works such as MANON, WERTHER, DON CARLOS, CARMEN, LA BOHEME, LA RONDINE, TOSCA, IL TROVATORE and Verdi's ‘Messa da Requiem’. Alagna has recorded works such as L'ELISIR D'AMORE, RIGOLETTO and LA TRAVIATA for other record labels. In 2004, Alagna signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. His first CD with this label was released under the title Roberto Alagna chante Luis Mariano. Numerous DVDs have been released - including AIDA and L'ELISIR D'AMORE on Decca, CYRANO DE BERGERAC and PAGLIACCI on Deutsche Grammophon. He plays Mario Cavaradossi in Benoît Jacquot's film version of TOSCA.
