Info for Haydn 2032, Vol. 16: The Surprise

Joseph Haydn, humour and music – none of these three is conceivable without the other two. To make a joke you need to know your audience, and better still to understand it! Haydn was capable of doing this as no one else could, and the audience to which he owed his greatest successes was the one that attended his London concerts. He offered it sudden timpani strokes, variations on the anthem ‘God save the King’, and a witty harpsichord solo played by himself.

Haydn’s compositional output is generally regarded as epitomising the concept of humour in music. In order to entertain an audience in such a way as to produce a grin, a smile or even an acoustically perceptible form of sudden amusement, it’s an asset to have the ability to place yourself as nearly as possible in the audience’s position, to grasp its particular preferences and expectations. And that is precisely what the Kapellmeister succeeded in doing when, finding himself with no further duties after the death of Prince Nicolaus I Esterházy, he was free to grace the concert life of the cosmopolitan city of London with his most recent symphonies and, what was more, with his personal presence.

The programme of the sixteenth edition of Haydn2032 – whose title echoes the familiar nickname of Symphony no.94 in the English-speaking world – consists of works he wrote or at least performed during his first trip to England, which lasted from 1791 to 1792. Their common element is the ingenious, humorous idea that becomes the defining event of the movement, if not indeed of the work as a whole, such as that once sensational timpani stroke which even today can suddenly jolt many a concertgoer out of his or her previously comfortable seat. What else does our Haydn ensemble, composed for the first time from the combined forces of IGA and KOB and reflecting the original forces of ‘Salomon’s Concert’ in London, have to offer? Well, there’s a little guest appearance by the maestro himself. And what else? Just let us surprise you . . .
