She's just different. Contrary to the trend marked by the Esbjorn Svensson Trio, the headstrong young pianist Olivia Trummer on their debut album avoids the heavy rhythms of hip hop. Instead, the 21-year-old Baden-Württembergerin, bassist Joel Locher and drummer Marcel Gustke subtle swing, but also romantic and consistently. The newcomer can condense a lot of time to build their pieces, they always listen to each other, they communicate, they relax the atmosphere and at the right moments - and without doubt have allies Miss Trummer a keen sense of drama and dynamics. Smooth and powerful, gripping and dreamy, introverted, and present sounds of the wings. Delicately decorated and plays around Olivia Trummer the melodic substance with differentiated stop, where she always remains focused on the essentials - a great talent that still leaves a lot of hope. Independent access to sensitive melodies of piano and bass together, while Marcel Gustke sets accents with his drums - he is far from being able to act only as a timekeeper. Rooted in the tradition of Paul Motian, he keeps his game pretty open and lets the clock structure but feel delicately. Stops and changes of rhythm fit perfectly with the eight numbers, and the themes are always worked out great.
'When a new talent emerges on their first recorded CD it can always be a happy occasion, for Olivia and her wonderful trio it is also a cause for celebration. This is a real jazz trio, not just a pianist with bass and drum accompaniment [...] All I can say is: Well done Olivia, I am proud of you!' (Richie Beirach, 2006)
