Info for Philarmonica

In the second half of the seventeenth century, London experienced an artistic golden age, with the arrival of many foreign musicians and the proliferation of theatres and concert halls where audiences came to listen to the stars of the moment. One of these musicians was the Italian Nicola Matteis, who arrived around 1660 and became the sensation of the London music scene. Purcell was only a child at the time and there is no record of their meeting, but it is very likely that he was familiar with Matteis’s works, including his Ayres , recorded here for the first time in a version for four-part consort. Exploration of this London effervescence yields to some surprising discoveries, such as the music of a mysterious composer who published trio sonatas around 1715 under the name Mrs Philarmonica. Le Consort presents the very first recording of this highly interesting music, probably influenced by Corelli and very likely written by a woman composer who, given the conventions of the time, made use of a pseudonym. Her true identity is unfortunately unknown to us.

Le Consort

Le Consort
brings together young musicians who share a common sensibility and enthusiasm. Formed by Théotime Langlois de Swarte and Justin Taylor, Le Consort explores repertoire as varied as it is complementary. Eighteenth-century instrumental music lies at the heart of this project: championing diverse works from trio sonatas, the quintessence of Baroque chamber music, to Baroque vocal music, to Classical chamber music with fortepiano. Le Consort is in residency at the Banque de France in Paris and the Singer-Polignac Foundation.

In June 2017, Le Consort won First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Loire Valley International Early Music Competition. The ensemble has been invited to perform at festivals across Europe including the Sablé Festival; Festival de l’Orangerie, Sceaux; Festival Les Festes Baroques, Bordeaux; Festival Les Musicales de Normandie; BRQ Vantaa Festival, Finland; Festival de Saint-Denis, Paris; Radio France Festival; Festival Internacional de Música Pau Casals, Spain; Festival de Pont-Croix; and Festival du Forez, to name but a few. In addition, the ensemble has appeared at notable venues such as Opéra de Dijon; BOZAR, Brussels; and l’Arsenal, Metz.

Le Consort records on the Alpha Classics label, and in September 2019 will release a disc devoted to the complete Trio Sonatas of Jean-François Dandrieu entitled OPUS 1. This follows their first recording of French cantatas (Venez chère ombre) with mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik (Victoires de la Musique winner and Second Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition), with whom the ensemble works closely. For this recording, the ensemble received a “Choc” from Classica and is among the “Choices” of France Musique.
