Mozart's last three symphonies, composed at close intervals in 1788, are rightly regarded as the high point of his symphonic output. However, their significance in terms of genre history should by no means be underestimated, as these three works already established important characteristics which were to be decisive for the genre of the symphony in the 19th century. Within the Viennese Classical period, with the symphony as the central genre, Mozart followed the work of Joseph Haydn. At the same time, his predecessor Haydn was to become Mozart's successor as a symphonist due to his long life: When Mozart died in 1791 at the age of 35, Haydn began his legendary late works, including the London Symphonies composed in the 1790s, at the age of almost 60.
