Info for Schumann: Fantasie C-Dur, Waldszenen, 3 Fantasiestücke

The Fantasy in C major, Op. 17 was composed during a period of great desperation and longing for the unattainable Clara Wieck. It has been often designated as Schumann’s most successful piano work, contrasting the principle of the free rhapsody with the tightly-knit sonata form.

The “Forest Scenes,” Op. 82 are nine miniatures related to the enchanted world of the “Scenes from Childhood.” They are programmatically designed and marked by a folkloristic tone. Outstanding amongst them is the scene entitled “The Bird as Prophet,” in which the song of the bird is naturalistically imitated.

The Three Fantasy Pieces, Op. 111, originally entitled Romances, form a cycle, bringing this recording to a “powerful and very marked” close.

"Robert Schumann seems to be close to his heart and accompanies the French pianist Nicolas Bringuier everywhere he goes. He recently made his debut at the Berlin Konzerthaus with the Piano Concerto op. 54 and won the silver medal at the International Schumann Piano Competition in Zwickau. It is therefore not surprising that he has chosen an all-Schumann programme for his debut album on Audite. He emphatically traces the nine fairytale-like miniatures of the "Forest Scenes" op. 82. Bringuier also attempts to fully grasp the romantic-lyrical gesture of the three Fantasiestücke op. 111. The centrepiece of this album, his interpretation of the C major Fantasy, is not characterised by musical maturity, but by youthful verve and a willingness to take risks." (Piano News)
