Info for News of Great Joy: Christmas from St Johns College, Oxford
The Choir of St John's College, Oxford, directed by David Bannister, sing music associated with Christmas, together with youthful work by Imogen Holst and Benjamin Britten. Looking towards the sixtieth anniversary of Elizabeth Poston's Penguin Book of Carols (1965), initially undertaken with Ralph Vaughan Williams, the recording presents music associated with these two composers and the works they edited, alongside newer pieces exemplifying and revivifying the English carol tradition.
The Choir of St John's College, Oxford
David Banister, conductor
Christian Wilson
is Director of Music at Keble College where he directs the celebrated chapel choir and oversees college music.
His career as an organist, pianist and conductor, has taken him to concert halls and cathedrals across five continents, with regular broadcasts and teaching engagements. His academic interests include late-medieval English church music, keyboard music up to 1750, and late-romantic/modernist Austro-German repertories.
David Bannister
combines his post of Choir Director at St John's College with that of Master of Music at Pusey House, as well as being Organist to the Cathedral Singers of Christ Church.
Previous positions have included serving as Director of Music at St Peter’s Wolvercote (2011–16), where he was afforded the rare privilege of being involved in the commissioning of a brand new pipe organ from Dorset-based craftsman Robin Jennings.
He has performed and recorded with a wide range of groups including, among others, The King’s Singers, and Charivari Agréable.
He is the founding Artistic Director of Vespri Segreti, a professional Oxford-based vocal ensemble which exists to perform a wide range of early and contemporary repertoire.
David welcomes enquires from prospective singers at any point.
