Info for Letter to a Friend
Produced by French Paradox, Letter to a Friend is an international project composed and directed by drummer Raphaël Pannier.
The idea is to create innovative music in collaboration with two giants of contemporary music, with diametrically opposed styles.
On one side, a jazz giant: saxophonist Miguel Zenón. Winner of the MacArthur Medal and the Guggenheim Prize, nominated 9 times for a Grammy Award, former musical director of the San Francisco Jazz Collective, composer of fifteen albums as leader of his quartet, Zenón brings a sense of melody, strong musical interaction in risky improvisations and unrivalled virtuosity to the project.
On the other side: another giant, Berlin electro music producer Martin Gret- schmann, known as Acid Pauli. A former companion of the singer Björk (he composed her album Vespertine in 2001), an obligatory guest at the world's biggest electro festivals (Cercle, Burning Man, etc.) and creator of the legendary Rote Sonne club in Munich, he is a world reference for modular sounds and the 'down tempo' style.
The album was recorded in June 2022 in New York at the Bunker Studio, in a quartet with François Moutin on double bass and Giorgi Mikadze on piano. The quartet recorded on sounds pre-designed by Acid Pauli, creating real open solos, like a jazz quartet, using a system of loops. For the ears of these seasoned jazzmen, the inspiration is brand new.
The theme of the album is the musical setting of a text, a powerful and profound letter signed by the painter Fra Angelico da Fiesole... in the 15th century! This letter is a call to listen, to open up to the world. It is a message of rare power and disconcerting universality. The letter is in ten stanzas. Each stanza is symbolically set to music by one of the tracks: ten stanzas have given birth to the ten tracks on this album. Letter to a Friend.
Letter to a Friend is a new kind of album, combining previously unexplored worlds and colours. The artistic work on this project is of a rare depth. The virtuosity, both instrumental and production, is at the highest possible level in today's music.
