The WDR Big Band is often referred to as the "band of soloists", as each member can also impress as a soloist and is also convincing in small groups. This is one of the reasons why the new series "WDR Big Band Small Groups" was recently launched, in which the musicians can present themselves in different constellations. In summer 2020, bassist John Goldsby joined forces with Hans Dekker (drums) and Billy Test (piano) to form a trio that is well-rehearsed, as they work together (almost) every day in an orchestral context.

John Goldsby
ist seit 1994 Mitglied der WDR Big Band Köln. Geboren in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Bereits in jungen Jahren spielte er u.a. mit Jimmy Raney, Jamey Aebersold, und Helen Humes. Von 1980 bis 1994 war er in der New Yorker Jazz-Szene aktiv und arbeitete mit vielen Jazzgrößen wie Benny Goodman, Wynton Marsalis und George Benson.

Er hat sieben eigene CDs eingespielt: "Tale of the Fingers" (Concord), "Viewpoint" (Nagel Heyer), "Cologne" (Fuzzy Music), "Live at the Nachbar", "The Visit", "Space for the Bass" und "The Innkeeper's Gun" (alle auf Bass Lion).

Er schreibt regelmäßig Artikel für die Magazine "Bass Player" in den USA, "Bass Professor" in Deutschland und "Double Bassist" in Grossbritannien. John unterrichtet an der Folkwang Hochschule Essen und ist auch als Lehrer in den Summer Jazz Clinics von Jamey Aebersold tätig.

Er ist seit 1994 bei der WDR Big Band als Kontrabassist und E-Bassist zu hören. 2009 verlieh ihm die International Society of Bassists den "Special Recognition Award for Scholarship".
