Info for Tell Them

Folk songs give us an insight into the emotional, social and political world of human communities in an intuitive and moving way. We embark on a journey from the folkloristic approach of Spanish songs to the arrangements of German, English and Hungarian folk songs. In dialogue with this: the song cycle "Tell them" (2023), written especially for Duo Amaris by the Brazilian composer João Luiz to texts by the Marshallese poet Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner. The 'folk instrument' guitar and the middle female voice form the ideal basic tone for this - narrative, lyrical, dramatic, spirited, quiet, sensitive, multilingual.

Duo Amaris

Duo Amaris
convinces its audience "with great virtuosity and consummate interpretation" (Salzgitter-Zeitung) and together they lend depth to the timeless simplicity of their ensemble line-up. Jesse Flowers' rich palette of guitar tone colours, coupled with Julia Spies' remarkably clear diction and the pure expressiveness of her timbre, enables them to bring stories to life that span the centuries, from songs by John Dowland to compositions written especially for them.

Spies and Flowers, both recognised soloists in their field, founded the duo Amaris in 2017, gave almost 20 concerts as part of the 61st Federal Selection of Concerts by Young Artists, which were praised by audiences and critics alike, and have since performed regularly as a permanent duo. In April 2020, they released their debut CD "Nachtstücke" on the PASCHENrecords label to critical acclaim. Their EP "Tell Them" is the anticipated follow-up to their debut, which is scheduled for release in spring 2024.

The work centres on captivating storytelling and wholehearted music-making, as well as a careful selection of repertoire that touches on topics rarely addressed in the world of classical music. Dialogue, approachability and humour are an integral part of their work together.
