A mysterious night atmosphere, pirate battles, and a breathtaking sunrise: With the ballet "Daphnis et Chloë," Maurice Ravel created what was arguably his most dazzling score—and that's saying something, given the magical timbres that the French composer also celebrated in all his other orchestral works. On their current album for Warner, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and its musical director Aziz Shokhakimov bring this masterpiece to life in all its glory—with fantastic results. "Daphnis et Chloë," the "Symphonie choréographique" premiered in Paris in 1912 by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, is best known today for the two suites that Ravel compiled from individual pieces for the concert hall. This makes it all the more spectacular to experience the approximately one-hour piece once again in its entirety in the context of Ravel's 150th birthday. In its review of the 2024 concert performance in Strasbourg, which forms the basis of the new recording, the French online music magazine "Résonances Lyriques" raved about the "opalescent timbres" produced by strings that impress with their "homogeneity and legato" in the upper register and "noble richness" in the lower register, "weightless woodwinds," brass with an "embracing sound," and, last but not least, a "multicolored" percussion section and harps that sound "intense and aristocratic." An instrumental mosaic of sound that condenses into a sparkling orchestral frenzy, atmospherically complemented by the singing of the Choeur Philharmonique de Strasbourg.

Aziz Shokhakimov
Seit September 2021 ist Aziz Shokhakimov Musik- und Künstlerischer Direktor des Orchesters Philharmonique de Strasbourg. Er gilt als einer der talentiertesten Dirigenten seiner Generation, angetrieben von einer ansteckenden Energie und einer außergewöhnlichen Technik.

Er leitet jedes Jahr nicht weniger als acht Abonnementreihen und tritt auch bei Reisen mit dem Orchester hervor – sei es in Südkorea (2022) oder in der Philharmonie von Paris, wo er 2023 eine denkwürdige Interpretation von Mahlers Dritter Sinfonie bot. Er setzt sich für die Verbreitung von Musik im Elsass ein und dirigiert regelmäßig dezentralisierte Konzerte. Zudem nimmt er jede Saison an der Programmierung für junge Zuhörer teil und ist auch im Bereich der Pädagogik und der Dirigier-Masterclasses anerkannt.

Aziz Shokhakimov wurde 1988 in Taschkent (Usbekistan) geboren und begann mit sechs Jahren an einer Musikschule für hochbegabte Kinder, wo er Violine, Bratsche und Dirigieren bei Vladimir Neymer studierte. Mit dreizehn Jahren gab er sein Debüt beim Usbekischen Nationalen Symphonieorchester und wurde noch im selben Jahr Assistenzdirigent (2006 wurde er dessen Chefdirigent). Im folgenden Jahr dirigierte er seine erste Oper – Carmen – an der Nationaloper von Usbekistan.

2010 gewann er den zweiten Preis beim renommierten Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg, was ihm die Möglichkeit gab, mit Orchestern wie der Staatskapelle Dresden, dem London Philharmonic Orchestra, dem Luzerner Sinfonieorchester und dem Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi zu arbeiten. 2016 erhielt er den Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award beim Salzburger Festival. Im Juni 2023 wurde er vom Kritikerverband als "Musiker des Jahres" ausgezeichnet.

Er wird heute eingeladen, international renommierte Orchester zu dirigieren, sei es in Frankreich, Europa, den USA oder Asien. Er ist zudem regelmäßiger Gast beim Festival von La Roque d’Anthéron. In der Saison 2024/2025 wird Aziz Shokhakimov erstmals die Sinfonieorchester von Atlanta und Dallas dirigieren und nach Basel, Bergen, Lissabon und Seattle zurückkehren.

Neben seiner symphonischen Karriere ist Aziz Shokhakimov auch im Opernbereich sehr gefragt. Im Februar 2024 gab er sein Debüt an der Münchener Oper, dessen öffentliche und kritische Erfolge ihm sofort eine erneute Einladung für die Saison 2024/2025 einbrachten. Kürzlich trat er auch an der Pariser Nationaloper mit Lucia di Lammermoor und an der Oper des Rhein mit drei besonders bemerkenswerten Produktionen auf: Die Vögel, Die Geschichte des Zaren Saltan und Lohengrin.

Diskografisch hebt sich Aziz Shokhakimov durch Partnerschaften mit Warner hervor, mit Aufnahmen von Tschaikowsky und Prokofjew. Ebenso ist er ein großer Befürworter der französischen Musik und hat unter anderem eine Aufnahme von Maurice Ravels Daphnis et Chloé produziert.

Under the musical and artistic direction of Aziz Shokhakimov from this season, the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg ranks as one of the major orchestras in France, with the label of “National Orchestra” being awarded in 1994. With 110 permanent musicians perpetuating its dual French/German tradition, the Orchestra is engaged in an ambitious project centred on symphonic music targeting all types of audiences and performs over 100 concerts every year. Its international renown is constantly enhanced by its dynamic audio-visual coverage.

The Orchestra boasts a vast repertoire from the 18th century to the present day for which internationally renowned conductors and soloists are invited, but it is also greatly attached to promoting a new generation of artists.

The Orchestra has also adopted an extensive audio-visual policy with a number of media partners, thereby ensuring visibility on a national and international scale.

The Orchestra contributes to Strasbourg’s outreach in France, performing regularly at the Philharmonie de Paris, and throughout Europe in the most prestigious concert halls.

With an impressive discography to its name, the Orchestra caused a sensation with its recording of two landmark opuses by Berlioz: Les Troyens and La Damnation de Faust, unanimously acclaimed by critics worldwide. The release of the CD BariTenor with Michael Spyres in September 21 has been widely acclaimed and awarded. Two recordings of opuses dedicated to Janáček and Prokofiev under the Warner label are still to be released this season.
