Info for Señor

At a Stockholm gig shortly after the release of Andreas Hourdakis Trio’s debut album In a Barn in late winter 2015 a very fine instrumental cover of Bob Dylan’s Señor (Tales of Yankee Power) from his 1978 Street Legal album suddenly appeared in the second set among Andreas’ original music.

When we shortly afterwards started to discuss a follow up album Señor made its precense known again and the more we talked about the more the idea of recording an album’s worth of Dylan covers seemed like the perfect sophomore trio project.

We kept talking about our favourite jazz versions of Dylan songs. We started to mine our recollections and record collections. We dug out and listened to Keith Jarrett’s 1968 album Somewhere Before with its live take of My Back Pages with Charlie Haden’s wonderful bass solo (there’s apparently a rare 7” single on the Vortex-label with this one on the A-side paired with a studio take of Lay Lady Lay on the flip side, look out for it!)

Jarrett’s not the only one, google Dylan and jazz and you will find plenty; names like Gerry Mulligan and Gary Burton, in guitarland Jim Hall and Bill Frisell… Dylan’s strong melodies have attracted many a jazz musician.

The trio is as before made up of Andreas Hourdakis, guitars, Martin Höper, double bass and Ola Hultgren, drums and percussion. Guest appearance by pianist Daniel Karlsson on the the B side’s Political World.

The inimitable Richard Johansson has to be mentioned also. His installation Adios amigos adios is nothing but the perfect cover for this album.
