Info for Big Blue

“Big Blue,” the brand new single from Norwegian artist Jonas Hibiki. The mellow, chill tune is the title track from Hibiki’s debut album, which is set for release early next year. Previously, Hibiki shared the album’s first single, “Someone Toulouse,” a serene lo-fi pop track that incorporates elements of psychedelia, funk, and hip-hop.

Similarly, “Big Blue” showcases Hibiki’s eclectic musical palette, but this time, he definitely leans more heavily into a soft, synth-driven bedroom pop sound. The song’s opening verses flow with soft waves of relaxed guitars and hypnotic keys that reflect the dark melancholy of Hibiki’s words, which dissect the feelings of hopelessness and grief that accompany depression. The track’s dark vibe is further accentuated by its warm, ultra-analog sound, allowing the instrumentation to flourish and complement the doleful lyrical content. Hibiki described the inspiration behind the intersection of the lyrics and music, and how the experience mimics the ocean: “In Big Blue, I talk about depression, and how similar that feeling is to the ocean. I was trying to capture that nostalgic, lo-fi, ultra-analog, synth-wave sound. For me, it fits perfectly with the theme.”

Jonas Hibiki

Jonas Hibiki
Bergen-based producer and artist Jonas Hibiki grew up in a musical family, and music is still a big part of his family life today - he produces his younger brother, hip hop artist Macho Mayne’s songs. He started his solo project after his high-school band broke up, as he wanted an artistic outlet where he would have the freedom to fulfil his creative ambitions. Hibiki’s sound is restless, landing somewhere in the synth-pop world, but incorporating elements from funk, hip-hop, rock and other genres - anything sound that sparks an idea in this omnivorous producer’s mind.
