Info for En Italie

Pianist Kishin Nagai and violinist Magdalēna Geka learnt about Marguerite Canal's Sonata for Violin and Piano with Claire Désert, their chamber music teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. Their curiosity about other French female composers who had been honoured with the Prix de Rome was aroused. This award, established by Louis XIV in 1663, was originally only open to painters and sculptors. In 1803, composers were also able to apply for a residence at the Villa Medici, which became the seat of the Académie de France in Rome in the same year. It was not until 1913 that Lili Boulanger was honoured as a composer, followed by Marguerite Canal (1920) and Jeanne Leleu (1923).
