David Long
started his musical career performing in the Braille Collective in bands such as Six Volts and Jungle Suite in the late 1980s. In 1990 he started The Mutton Birds with Don McGlashan and made three albums over the next seven years.

At the same time, he began to compose for contemporary dance and film and television. Returning to New Zealand after some years away he worked on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy creating (with Plan 9 Music) the music of Middle Earth.

Since then, he has composed for many films and TV series including the BBC adaptation of The Luminaries (winning the 2020 APRA award for original music in a TV series). He also has made albums with bands The Labcoats and Teeth and released a number of his own albums.
