Info zu Blue Raspberry (Deluxe)

Katy Kirby is releasing the deluxe edition of her critically acclaimed album Blue Raspberry which features two additional tracks, ‘Headlights’ and ‘Naperville’, which harness her tongue-in-cheek turns of phrase, wall-of-sound-level distortion and contemplations on queer desire.

“‘Headlights’ isn’t as open-hearted as any of the songs that ended up on ‘Blue Raspberry’,” Kirby explains. “We could call it an ode to the cumulative, low-level suffering that accompanies all human life or we could just say that it’s kind of a bratty little ballad about being fucking tired, you know?”

Released in January of this year, Blue Raspberry received praise from Pitchfork, Stereogum, Paste, NPR, No Depression, Uproxx, FLOOD and more, with the Associated Press explaining that “she savors bits and pieces of the relationship in which she realized her queerness … lyrics are carefully crafted to highlight the little things her partner does in her appearance to impress, something that women recognize in other women.”

“Kirby’s best writing shows off her talent for contracting abstract ideas into the kinds of pithy lines that inspire furious underlining.” – Pitchfork

“To spend the time with ‘Blue Raspberry’ is to be totally broken apart by it, but like Kirby, eventually pieced back together, ready to jump in again.” –No Depression

“Part of what sets Kirby apart is the language sheuses; the way words slip off her tongue in syllables almost too big for the songs that contain them. As a narrator, Kirby is clever and knows it.”

"Cubic Zirconia" co-written with Austin Arnold, Logan Chung, and Alberto Sewald. "Party of the Century" co-written with Christian Lee Hutson and Logan Chung. "Table" co-written with Logan Chung.

Katy Kirby
is a songwriter and indie rock practitioner with a writerly focus on unspoken rules, misunderstandings of all kinds, and boredom.

Kirby was born, raised, and homeschooled by two ex-cheerleaders in small-town Texas, where she started singing in church amidst the soaring, pasteurized-pop choruses of evangelical worship services. After high school, Kirby moved to Nashville, where she managed to graduate college with a rapidly expanding circle of artistic allies, an amorphous collection of leftist beliefs, and a few handfuls of songs.

After a series of painful failures to complete a record that reflected the temperament of those songs, Kirby finally turned to dear friends and co-conspirators to form a band capable of constructing a satisfying full length.

My name is Katie Kirby, and I am a multi-faceted artist. All of the work I produce is cohesive, and it tells a story-as it reflects my life and experiences as they happen. I have a multitude of interests and skills to express exactly who I am and what I want to say to the world through multiple different forms of art, so that it can be experienced by and inspire as many different people as possible-no matter the type of media they consume. I use my art to navigate the turbulences of my life, to turn my emotions, beliefs and stories, especially, into something more beautiful and understandable, and even relatable for others and myself to enjoy. It expresses my personal philosophies or beliefs, and questions the notion of self-identity. As a painter, I’ve coined the term “psychedelic surrealism” to describe much of my work, which features bright colors, dream-like compositions and repeating patterns.

I grew up in Albany, New York, where I was fortunate enough to able to explore and express myself in a variety of different ways. Though art, painting particularly, was the first love of my life, I grew up playing sports, I sang in school choirs, learned the cello, (quit the cello), learned the clarinet, (subsequently quit the clarinet) and taught myself guitar (which actually stuck). I graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in 2020, during covid, in which I was able to rediscover and define my love of painting in between zoom classes. Later that year I went off to college at the University of Richmond to study pre-law. It was there in the few art related classes I took, that I really stated developing my personal artistic style and vision of myself as an artist. I took classes in Sculpting, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, and Sound/Video Design. I ultimately decided that art was my true passion, and transferred to SCAD in 2022 to further my artistic career.

Since moving to Savannah, I have been able to continue to develop and perfect my crafts further, especially the digital realm. I am now competent in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects. Additionally, I have made invaluable connections with people in my art field and fields I never even dreamed of including music production and film. Most recently, I appeared in the upcoming feature film, 'May December' starring Natalie Portman, Charles Melton and Julianne Moore.
