Orville Peck nimmt uns mit auf einen „Midnight Ride“ – und er sitzt nicht allein im Truck. Auf dem Beifahrersitz: die globale Ikone Kyle Minogue. Auf der Rückbank: Superstar-DJ/Producer Diplo. Nachdem die genresprengende Kollaboration vor wenigen Tagen bei Kylie Minogues Headline-Set auf dem „Out Loud Festival“ beim WeHo Pride Premiere feierte, wo Peck als Überraschungsgast dazukam – „Still not over this!!“, schwärmte Minogue im Anschluss –, ist „Midnight Ride“ nun über Warner Records überall erhältlich.

Die neueste Single aus Pecks kommendem Duettalbum „Stampede“ schlägt musikalisch den großen Bogen und verbindet Country-Stil, Pop-Hooks und Club-Beats zu einer tanzbaren Disco-Hymne. Nichts Neues für den bahnbrechenden und vielfach ausgezeichneten Country-Künstler, der im Laufe seiner Karriere die Grenzen der Country Music immer wieder neu gezogen hat. Mit seinem enormen enormem Crossover-Appeal ist „Midnight Ride” dafür ein geradezu idealtypisches Beispiel.

„Diesen Song mit Kylie und Diplo zu machen, ist definitiv ein Bucketlist-Moment für mich“, sagt Peck in einem Statement. „Kylie war die erste Person, die ich für eine Mitwirkung an ‚Stampede‘ gefragt habe. Einfach weil ich genau wusste, welche Art von Magie wir zusammen erzeugen könnten.“

„Midnight Ride“ folgt auf Pecks Veröffentlichung von „Stampede Vol. 1“ Mitte Mai. Der erste Teil seines kommenden Duettalbums hielt Kollaborationen mit Willie Nelson, Elton John, Noah Cyrus, Midland, Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff und Bu Cuaron bereit. Angeführt wurde die Sammlung von seiner Coverversion von „Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other“, ursprünglich 2006 von Willie Nelson veröffentlicht.

Aktuell ist Orville Peck auf „Stampede Tour“ durch Nordamerika, außerdem kündigte er Anfang der Woche die inzwischen sechste Ausgabe seines jährlichen „Rodeo“-Events an, wo es u. a. ein Headline-Set von Peck & Tanya Tucker und Performances von Medium Build, Mickey Guyton, Reyna Roberts, The Nude Party und anderen geben wird. Das von John Waters moderierte Rodeo findet am 24. August im Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville statt, eingerahmt von einer Kickoff-Party im Basement East am 23. August und einer Abschlussparty im Brooklyn Bowl am 25. August.

Im Mai wurde Peck bei den 35. GLAAD Media Awards in New York City mit dem Vito Russo Award ausgezeichnet. Der Preis wird an Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens verliehen, die sich um die Akzeptanz von LGBTQ in der Gesellschaft verdient gemacht haben. Auf Peck trifft das in jedem Fall zu, denn er hat sich zu seinen eigenen Bedingungen eine beeindruckende Position in der Country Music und der Musiklandschaft im Allgemeinen geschaffen. Mit „Midnight Ride“ legt er nun erneut einen Song vor, der ihm ein ganz neues Publikum erschließen dürfte.

Peck’s is a handsome as hell sound that’s full of twangy guitars, shuffling 50’s percussion, and banjos. On tracks like debut single “Dead Of Night”, which tells the story of a biker hustler’s whirlwind romance and its tragic end, Peck throws back to a bygone era of queer lovin’ by channeling the cruising stories of artist David Wojnarowicz.
