Info zu Diana & Marvin (Remastered)
It takes two, goes the saying, and in 1973 Motown's two biggest solo superstars, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross, proved the saying true when they teamed for an unforgettable duet album. Each was coming off the greatest success of their solo careers, Diana with her No. 1 Touch Me In The Morning and her Academy Award nomination for the emotionally charged Lady Sings The Blues; Marvin with his No. 1 hit "Let's Get It On" from the album of the same name, one of the most sexually-charged albums in pop history. Now they would be together for one soon-to-be classic album.
Ross and Gaye had always felt a mutual admiration for each other's talent. Gaye had already gained a reputation for classic male-female duets, with Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells and Kim Weston. Ross, of course, knew how to harmonize after her tenure in the greatest girl group of all time, the Supremes. When they joined together for Diana & Marvin, their emotional and vocal chemistry was apparent. Not surprisingly, the album was a hit, Top 10 R&B and Top 30 pop. "My Mistake (Was To Love You)" reached Top 20 pop and R&B, "You're A Special Part Of Me" No. 4 R&B/No. 12 pop and "Don't Knock My Love" Top 30 R&B/Top 50 pop.
Diana Ross then went on to continue her reign as a supreme pop diva. Marvin Gaye continued a career which would end tragically yet achieve musical immortality. But together, on one album, their voices soared to new heights.
"By the early '70s, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye were in completely different creative territories. Ross was settling down as a professional diva, while Gaye was pushing his art forward with What's Going On, Trouble Man, and Let's Get It On. What they shared, apart from a mutual admiration, was that they were two of the biggest artists on Motown and that their voices sounded terrific together. So it wasn't entirely surprising that the duo teamed up in 1973 for the Diana & Marvin album. Although the album didn't produce any timeless classics, the results were still very good -- good enough for the record to be one of Ross' best efforts of the era. The highlights are the three singles ("You're a Special Part of Me," "My Mistake (Was to Love You)," "Don't Knock My Love"), but even the weaker tunes are redeemed by the duo's indelible chemistry, and that's the reason why it's worth a listen."
