Info zu Family Tree
Soul is a style, but it is above all a history. Tinged with gospel hymns, infused with stylised arrangements evocative of Mayfield, but also with modern grooves, hip-hop and electro, Family Tree bears the vestiges of this history. From the 1960s to the 21st century, from the banks of the Hudson to those of the Seine, Lisa Spada distills this soul story while avoiding the pitfalls of a stylisation stuck in the past. Backed by her touring companion Gaël Maffre, who she previously partnered in Third Shot, by the beatmaker Tismé and the rapper Edash Quata, Spada gives her soul music a modern impetus, inspired by the past but already looking to the future. Electronic folk songs, 60s-style ballads with modern production and a gospel revisited are the ingredients of this collection, to which Spada’s vocal mastery, capable of power as well as subtlety, adds a unique dimension.
Family Tree is a love story, but above all a life story. A quasi concept-disc full of contrasting emotions, it narrates the journey of a young woman who is in love but abandoned, who fights but is beaten, who finally finds comfort in the reliable permanence of the family tree. The unfolding story is told through back-to- back exchanges with Edash – by turns Prince Charming and the big bad wolf – with guitars and electronic rhythms, unleashing an emotional charge which is perfectly matched to these highs and lows, these dreams and realities, with all the necessary gentleness and anger.
A regular on the stages of Paris and in studio sessions with Sandra Nkake, Emily Loizeau, Ben l’Oncle Soul and giant soul choirs (Let’s Get Together), Lisa Spada gives us a top-quality recording elevated by an elegant and daring production, which confirms soul music’s bright future. Full of life and character, it gives a nod to the past while already looking toward tomorrow.
