For jazz musicians, A Love Supreme is a fundamental text. One of those works that changes a destiny, one of those pieces that transforms an aesthetic. By deciding to arrange this suite for big band and by entrusting his fellow musicians, the Belmondo brothers, with the task of doing it justice in their rendition of it, Christophe Dal Sasso has not betrayed it.

On the contrary, respecting the work’s architecture and its four movements, his arrangement is faithful to the fervent spirit of John Coltrane’s music, which embraces—in an ode which traces the odyssey of the Black American people—reminiscences of Africa, the lament of blues, the cry of jazz, and the vibration of gospel.

The scaling up for big band only magnifies the work’s density, reminding us that before focusing on his quartet, Coltrane himself had wanted to explore this dimension of the art of jazz in Africa/Brass, in which he uses the power of brass instruments to reconnect with the spirit of the lost continent.
