"Kreeta-Maria Kentala, die bereits mehrere großartige Alben für Alba aufgenommen hat, wird dieses Mal von dem Pianisten Joonas Ahonen begleitet. Es hat schon viele Aufnahmen dieser Beethoven-Sonaten gegeben, aber in dieser Aufnahme wurde etwas erreicht, das in früheren Aufnahmen nicht vorhanden ist. Joonas und Kreeta-Marias Spiel ist erfrischend frisch und gut gelaunt. Die Aufnahme wurde in der Schauman-Halle in Pietarsaari gemacht. Joonas Ahonens Instrument ist ein Conrad Graf aus der Zeit um 1827, ein Hammerflügel und eine Barockvioline, die von Kreeta-Maria Kentala zu Beginn des 20. Im Booklet findet sich ein faszinierender Text von Minna Lindgren über Beethoven und die Entstehung der Sonaten auf dieser CD. Kreeta-Maria Kentala
is a pioneer of the Finnish early music movement, at home as a soloist, conductor and teacher of baroque, classical, romantic and folk music. He performs regularly both in solo and chamber music projects and as a soloist, concertmaster and conductor of various orchestras.

Kreeta-Maria studied violin at the Music Institute of Central Ostrobothnia under Mauno Järvelä, Juha Kangka and Kaija Saariketu. From there, the path led to the Sibelius Academy, where she studied with Jennifer and Endre Wolf at the Edsberg Music School in Stockholm. At the Edsberg master class, Kreeta-Maria met Reinhard Goebel, and in his wake, moved on to study baroque music in Cologne. Kreeta-Maria also studied baroque music in master classes and joint projects with baroque violinist Monica Huggett.

Joonas Ahonen
The Finnish pianist Joonas Ahonen has received critical acclaim both as a performer of Ligeti’s music and as a Beethoven interpreter on historical pianos. A student of Tuija Hakkila and Liisa Pohjola at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, he early on developed a strong interest in contemporary music, and since 2011 he has been a member of the renowned Austrian soloist ensemble Klangforum Wien. A dedicated chamber musician, Ahonen has performed at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Davos Festival and Pekka Kuusisto’s ‘Our Festival’. As a soloist Ahonen has appeared with orchestras and ensembles such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Avanti! and Ictus. Recent highlights include appearances at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and in the Elbphilharmonie concert series in Hamburg.

For BIS he has previously recorded György Ligeti’s Piano Concerto. The recently released all-Ligeti disc (BIS-2209) has received top marks on web site Klassik-Heute.de and acclaim in The Guardian: ‘Ahonen’s playing never loses focus or composure, whether hurtling through torrents of notes in the outer movements of the Piano Concerto or underpinning the melancholy introspection in its central ones…’
