Info zu Unplugged

„This is rock and roll, shelter of my soul.”

But what is it? A music genre? A lifestyle? A way to die? Circus? All of these?

Whatever it is, in the past decades the name was so often and so badly misused, that it’s a cliché to even mention it here. But still, as the members of The Sick Unicorn say it in the last song on their first album, Unleashed (released in 2019), ’This is rock and roll, shelter of my soul.’

Because for them rock and roll really is a shelter. A shelter from people, work, the world, even from themselves. And this is the only phrase that describes their fast and wild songs easily.

Is it a cliché? Perhaps. Do they give a damn? No.

The legend of the unicorn takes us back to a time, when 4 troubadours made music in a band called KRINKLE. Their music was way more metal-like, complex and unpredictable; the songs were driven more by smart decisions than by instincts. Unfortunately, they didn’t find the space with open-minded audience they were looking for, so due to the lack of success and recognition, the guys eventually got bored and decided to part ways and do something else.

After some time off 3 of them decided to start making some noise again, but this time something easier and more popular. No pressure, just the joy of making music. Loud music. So they took the title of one of the old songs, and hoped that this time the mythological creature will bring them better luck than the last time. They then found a young, new member and that’s how The Sick Unicorn was born. The rest is history. Or recent past.

As for the members, Big Rob plays his guitar, Danny Kid the bass guitar, Afgán the drums and Shuey uses his vocal chords to do everything in their power to wake up the audience from their catatonic semi-sleep. There is a veteran rocker, an ice hockey player, a marathon-runner who smokes, and a 60 years old wise man living in a 21 years old body in this band. We purposefully don’t reveal who is who. Let’s talk about the songs on the Unleashed LP; they are smoking hot - and they bring some clichés to life. There are no compromises in them, for example.

It’s not just the music, the lyrics are provoking the audience too, they make them think, and it’s their goal to break the tradition of the old, melancholic, ’the world is a horrible place’ kind of attitude. They aim to bring some positivity and motivation in instead. The exact same attitude is significantly present at their concerts too: the energy level creates an atmosphere, which is as it was in the 80’s underground clubs.

What do they have to do with blues? Well, nothing with the lifestyle. However, their music is closely related to the genre, which is proven by the fact that the a number of songs played here needed the shuffle as badly as the late BB King needed a nice cold beer in a hot Alabama afternoon. And the band enjoyed slowing down, turning the volume a bit lower and putting their own songs into a different context. Does it make any sense? Listen to the songs and decide for yourself.
