Nothing could be more illustrative of the Romantic Era than that. Before Beethoven music was about creating an esthetic outside of ourselves. From this symphony onward we have the feeling of being the thinker of thoughts and the ones with agency, the idea that art lies in our subjective experience of the world. Through this means of expression we are able to experience music that is reflective of the human experience, its' joys and sorrows. He doesn't use many chords or instruments that were not used before him but somehow, we sense the fault lines of history shifting beneath our feet.
