Alexander von Schlippenbach, Slow Pieces For Aki, the emphasis being on the word "slow," not on rediscovering slowness but discovering slowness anew - dedicated to his wife Aki Takase.

With slow pieces, short pieces, compositions in which every single note demands the highest degree of attention, virtuosity shifts from the purely technical to the actual notes themselves, avoiding all irrel­evancies. Sounds that are able to glow in the dark and form themselves into star signs. It is not only Jazz and New Music that appear from far away, but also classical and romantic music, always reflected by the personality, the life and playing experience of Alexander von Schlippenbach.

Alexander von Schlippenbach
geboren 1938 in Berlin ist ein deutscher Jazz-Pianist, freischaffender Arrangeur und Komponist in Berlin. Schlippenbach gilt als wichtiger Vertreter der ersten Generation der europäischen Free Jazz-Musiker.

Klavierunterricht erhielt Schlippenbach ab dem achten Lebensjahr und studierte nach dem Abitur Komposition an der Hochschule für Musik Köln bei den Komponisten Rudolf Petzold und Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Schon während des Studiums war er Pianist im Jazzquintett von Gunter Hampel und ab 1965 im Ensemble von Manfred Schoof. Mit 28 Jahren gründete er zunächst für einen Kompositionsaufrag auf dem Berliner Jazzfestival das Globe Unity Orchestra, das er bis heute leitet. 1968 organisierte er eines der "Anti-Festivals" in Köln, kurz darauf war er an der Gründung des zunächst im Besitz der Musiker befindlichen Labels Free Music Production beteiligt.

Seit 1970 besteht sein Trio mit Paul Lovens und Evan Parker (zunächst als Quartett mit Peter Kowald bzw. Alan Silva). Er unternahm Tourneen für das Goethe-Institut in Europa, Asien, Australien und den USA, sowie Theaterarbeit mit Sven-Åke Johansson. Im Rundfunk produzierte er für den WDR, für SDR, SWF, Radiotelevisione Italiana, RIAS bzw. das Deutschlandradio Berlin. Zahlreiche Langspielplatten- und CDs erschienen bei MPS, CBS, ECM, ENJA, FMP und Disk Union (siehe erster Weblink).

1988 erfolgte die Gründung des Berliner Contemporary Jazz Orchesters mit dem Ziel, neue Werke zeitgenössischer Jazzkomponisten aufzuführen und auf Tonträger zu produzieren. Weiterhin arbeitete Schlippenbach in Duos mit Sven-Åke Johansson, mit seiner Frau Aki Takase, mit Tony Oxley, mit Sam Rivers und mit Sunny Murray. 1999 erfolgte die Aufnahme des Gesamtwerks von Thelonious Monk mit dem NDR. Im Jahr 2001 fungierte er als Programmberater des Total Music Meetings. Gelegentlich tritt er gemeinsam mit seinem Sohn Vincent alias DJ Illvibe auf.

Er erhielt Schallplattenpreise der Union Deutscher Jazzmusiker (UDJ) (1980/81) und ist Träger des Kunstpreises der Stadt Berlin 1976 und des Albert-Mangelsdorff-Preises 1994. 2007 erhielt er den SWR-Jazzpreis.
