Nach dem techno-industriellen, von Trent Reznor beeinflussten Earthling von 1997 kehrte David Bowie mit Hours auf die Erde zurück. Und obwohl dieses Album einen Ambient-Charakter hat und seinen Anteil an Loops und Programmierungen enthält, ist es insgesamt organisch. Hours“ schafft es, gleichzeitig innovativ und persönlich zu sein. „Thursday's Child“, eine kommerziell klingende Single, verwendet Streicher und Synthesizer, um ein atmosphärisches Gefühl zu erzeugen. Die glaubwürdige Solokünstlerin Holly Palmer leiht dem Stück ihre starke Stimme. „Something in the Air“ zeigt das zurückhaltende, aber wirkungsvolle Gitarrentalent von Reeves Gabrels, der zuvor mit Bowie an seinem Solomaterial und in Tin Machine gearbeitet hat. „Survive“ ist ein wunderschönes Stück, das mit Mellotron und einem akustischen Intro und Ende aufwartet. Das gedämpfte Gefühl von „Hours“ zeigt einen klassischen Rocker, der sich wohlfühlt und introspektiv ist. David Bowie ist keiner, der sich auf seinen Lorbeeren ausruht, sondern er bringt weiterhin lebendiges Material heraus.
